What is Discourse Analysis?

What is Discourse Analysis?
  • Discourse is a complete linguistic record of communication events, both oral and written
  • Discourse is as a series of interrelated sentences (connecting one proposition with another) and forming a unity of meaning.
  • Purwo (1993: 4) defines discourse as a speech event, that is, what happens between speaker and receiver.
  • Schiffrin (1994: 18) defines discourse as a language that has a certain system that is used in accordance with the context.
In principle, discourse is a combination of four types of structure:
  • the structure of ideas,
  • the speaker's thought process,
  • the choice of the speaker's language and
  • situation.
